Bhalayogasthini focused her action plan on improving the standard of English among a batch of 13 year olds from her school, the Kandy Girls High School (KGHS). Gasthi, who was appointed as the Sri Lankan ambassador for the ‘One World Youth Project (OWYP) last year, used her links made through this organization to accomplish her goal, in a somewhat unique manner by creating an opportunity for these kids to learn English with ease and joy.
The grade 8 E class of KGHS is linked with the Davis Middle school in California, United States. Due to this effort, these students exchanged letters and information about their cultures and lives with each other very frequently. This project which concluded recently, not only allowed the students to experience a new culture through pen pals, but also helped them to improve their standard of English.
With her talent, she also attended the “International Partnership through Education and Collaboration” conference in Canada, which was held in a forest. She mentioned that, she learnt a lot through team building activities such as Canoeing, Hiking and hunting. Speaking on the summer camp organized by UNESCO, where she worked as a facilitator, she says that, children around the world learnt about American culture, cultural exchange etc. Her main idea is that a cultural change should occur in the early stages of youth development in order to mutually understand the differences in the world.
