Mother Sri Lanka honoured with “Most Outstanding Sri Lankan Award 2010”
These prestigious awards recognize the outstanding contributions made by Sri Lankans towards the betterment of society and advancement of their chosen fields. This glamorous event was organized by the International Association of Lions Clubs District 306A1 and was held at Waters Edge on the 1st of May, 2010.
Mother Sri Lanka Trust was awarded the Most Outstanding Sri Lankan Award 2010 under the category of “Community Service” which was initiated by Janaki,
the vibrant lady having a unique combination of experiences as an entrepreneur and then of working in both private and public sectors. This illustrious career is backed by a sound academic background, of a M.A. in Applied Statistics from the University of Missouri, USA and a B.Sc in Mathematics jointly from the University of Colombo and University of Missouri and currently reading for a PhD at the University of Colombo. Among her other accolades are the All American Scholar Award and the US Achievement Academy award for outstanding performance in the USA.
Being in top management for over 15 years with diversified exposure, her move to the public sector leaving an illustrious private sector career as the founder and CEO of her own market research company for 10 years which she build from scratch to become part of the world’s leading research firm and then another 4 years as the Director - Strategic Planning at a leading Food Manufacturing and Retail company encapsulates her passion for living the quote
“Ask not what the country can do for you but what you can do for the country”.
She joined the President’s Office in January 2008 as Director - Strategy & Perceptions Management with the objective of making a significant contribution to the development of her Motherland during a crucial period of the country’s history. At this time, the country was going through many crisis with a civil war at its’ peak and facing a global financial crisis, oil crisis and a food crisis. Things looked really bleak and people were loosing faith in the country. It was this background that led her to initiate a process that would encourage and motivate Sri Lankans to think positive of the country and contribute to build this country to its’ true potential while uniting as one family. H.E. the President Mahinda Rajapaksa gave his blessings, encouragement and support for the movement and is in fact responsible for the name “Mother Sri Lanka” with the tagline “My family of 20 million people. In fact the way the Mother Sri Lanka logo is written in all 3 languages and its’ tagline is to send the implicit message that we are but one country and one nation.
When Mother Sri Lanka was launched in January 2009, Janaki did not have staff, an office, nor a budget for the project. However, with her strong determination to pursue something that one feels is right, she set up the Mother Sri Lanka Trust which is a non profit, non-political, charitable organization, formed a group of volunteers from public and private sector professionals and convinced private sector companies to fund this national initiative.
Recognising the children of our country as one of the key target groups of this movement the Mother Sri Lanka launched the Mother Sri Lanka Schools Program as an initiative designed to kindle pride and passion among school children and stimulate discussion on what it means to be a Sri Lankan. This program comprised of a competition among school children to debate and begin a dialogue on the theme of: “What can we, as children of Sri Lanka give back to our country?” aptly named, “Apen Ratata, Rata Nagumata.”
Today, just over 1 year later, this gigantic team though small in number have managed to conduct awareness campaigns and successfully implement the Mother Sri Lanka schools program that has reached over 2600 schools directly in just over 7-8 months, touching over 3 million students and over 6 million parents and officials.
Many of us who get discouraged at the slightest drawback when you want to start something new, can take a lesson from this small group of 8 people who have undoubtedly proven the following:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”.
Margaret Mead
